How to Remove Tar, Glue, Sap and Bugs from Car Paint

After a highway trip or a freshly paved road you find sticky black spots behind the wheels and along the doors, and bug residue on the bonnet and mirrors. Remove a sticker or badge and the glue stays behind. None of this comes off with shampoo – and scraping with a fingernail or blade will scratch the clear coat.

Why Doesn't Shampoo Remove It?

Tar, bitumen, adhesive and tree sap are oily/resinous materials that don't dissolve in water; they need a solvent to soften them. Bug residue contains proteins that bake onto hot panels, and left for long it etches a mark into the clear coat.

The Right Product

SOLVAR Tar & Adhesive Remover is a citrus-solvent spray (d-Limonene) that dissolves tar, bitumen and resin in 1–2 minutes:

  • Removes tar, sticker, badge and tape glue, tree sap and bug splatter.
  • Wipe, don't scrub – so no new scratches.
  • Safe on cured paint, glass, chrome, alloy wheels and most hard plastics.
  • Pleasant citrus odour.

Step by Step

  1. Wash the area or at least remove loose dust so you don't grind it in.
  2. Work on a cool panel in the shade.
  3. Spray directly on the spot and wait 1–2 minutes until the tar starts to run.
  4. Wipe gently with a microfiber towel in one direction. If anything remains, re-spray rather than pressing harder.
  5. For stickers: warm the sticker slightly with a hair dryer and peel slowly, then spray the leftover glue and wipe.
  6. Wash the area with shampoo afterwards to remove solvent residue.
  7. Re-protect with a spray of Hydro Shield Pro, since the solvent can remove existing wax.

Common Mistakes

  • Kerosene, petrol or thinner: they remove tar but can harm clear coat, rubber and plastic – and are a fire risk.
  • Scraping with a nail, blade or steel wool: guaranteed scratches.
  • Leaving bugs and bird droppings for days in the heat: they etch the clear coat and then need polishing.
  • Using it on fresh, uncured paint after a body-shop respray – wait until it has fully cured.

What If a Mark Remains?

If a dull mark or etching remains after the spot is gone, the clear coat is damaged and needs a light polish with Hybrid 500 or Perfect 350. See our scratch removal guide.

FAQ

Can I use it on glass? Yes – it is glass-safe and great for bug residue and old permit stickers.

Will it harm tint or PPF? Solvents can affect some film adhesives, so don't spray on film edges and test in a hidden spot first.

How often should I use it? Only when needed – after road trips, driving on new asphalt, or when removing stickers.
