Clear Car Windows Without Fog or Streaks: How to Clean Car Glass Properly

Clear Car Windows Without Fog or Streaks
Clean glass isn't a luxury – it's safety. A film of fog or wipe streaks under oncoming headlights at night or low afternoon sun can blind you for seconds. Here's how to clean car glass properly and stop it fogging.
Why Does Glass Film Over on the Inside?
- Plastic off-gassing: sun heat releases plasticisers from the dashboard that condense on the glass as an oily film.
- Smoke and fingerprints.
- Condensation: when the glass is colder than humid cabin air (winter, rain, humid coastal cities), water condenses as tiny droplets that scatter light. Dirty glass fogs faster because grime gives droplets somewhere to form.
Why Household Glass Cleaner Isn't Ideal
Most household glass cleaners contain ammonia, which over time can damage some window tint films, dry out rubber seals and dull plastics. They also aren't designed to cut road film and dashboard haze.
The Right Product
SOLVAR Anti-Fog Glass Cleaner:
- Cuts road film, smoke haze and fingerprints.
- Leaves an anti-fog film that stops droplets forming in cold, humid weather.
- Ammonia-free – safe on tint, seals and plastics.
- Flashes off fast, streak- and lint-free.
For car washes and showrooms, Glass Cleaner Concentrate dilutes 1:3 for heavy film up to 1:10 for daily work.
Streak-Free Technique
- Work in the shade – hot glass dries the cleaner before you can wipe it.
- Two microfiber towels: one to clean, one dry to buff (a waffle-weave or dedicated glass towel is best).
- Inside: spray onto the towel, not the glass, so it doesn't drip onto the dash. Wipe horizontally inside and vertically outside – then you'll know which side any streak is on.
- Don't forget the lower corners of the windscreen – use the back of your hand inside the towel.
- Lower the windows a few centimetres to clean the top edge hidden inside the seal.
Bugs and Tar on the Outside
For bug residue, tar or sticker glue that won't shift, use glass-safe Tar & Adhesive Remover, then follow with glass cleaner. Replace wiper blades if they streak – summer heat hardens the rubber quickly.
Quick Tips to Stop Fogging While Driving
- Turn on A/C with the heater – A/C pulls moisture out of the air.
- Direct airflow to the windscreen and switch off recirculation.
- Don't wipe fog with your hand – skin oil makes it worse.
FAQ
Is it safe on window tint? Ammonia-free cleaners are safe, and SOLVAR Anti-Fog Glass Cleaner is ammonia-free. Wait a week after new tint is installed before cleaning it.
Why does glass streak after cleaning? Usually a dirty or softener-treated towel, cleaning in the sun, or dashboard dressing residue.
White water spots won't come off? They are mineral deposits from hard water and need a dedicated water-spot remover or glass polish; prevent them by drying the car straight after washing.
