How to Get Rid of Bad Smells in Your Car
Getting into your car to a bad smell is embarrassing, especially with passengers. The first instinct is a new air freshener, but fresheners only mask odours – and the mix can be worse. The real fix is to reach the source.
Common Odour Sources
- Food, milk and juice spills under seats and in the carpet.
- Damp carpet from a water leak or wet mats – leads to mould.
- Smoke absorbed into fabric and the headliner.
- The A/C: the evaporator stays wet and dark, so bacteria and mould grow on it, giving a musty "wet socks" smell when you switch it on.
- Pets and sweat on the upholstery.
Cleaning at the Source
- Empty the car and check under seats, in pockets and the boot.
- Vacuum thoroughly – carpet, seats and boot.
- Clean the source with an odour-neutralising cleaner: Interior Cleaner attacks the cause instead of masking it; detailing shops can use the concentrate with an extractor for carpets and seats.
- Dry completely: leave windows open somewhere safe or run the A/C – trapped moisture brings smells back.
- Mats: rubber with Road Ready, carpet with Interior Cleaner, then dry in the sun.
A/C Odour
- Replace the cabin air filter – typically every 12 months or per your manual, sooner in dusty climates.
- Simple habit: switch off A/C cooling and leave the fan running for two minutes before you arrive and switch off, so the evaporator dries.
- If the smell persists, have the evaporator and ducts cleaned by an auto A/C specialist.
Quick Tips
- Baking soda sprinkled on dry carpet overnight and vacuumed in the morning absorbs odours.
- Clean the inside glass with Glass Cleaner – smoke film on glass holds smell.
- Once the smell is gone, use a light freshener only if you like one.
FAQ
Sweet, syrupy smell inside the car? It may be a coolant leak from the heater core – have a mechanic check it promptly.
Petrol smell? Don't ignore it; have the car inspected immediately.
Are ozone machines safe? They are used by specialist centres and must only run with the car completely empty, followed by thorough airing.
